“Help! I need to get my roof replaced but not sure what shingle I need to get?”
After deciding you are in need of a roof replacement, your next decision would be what type of shingle you need for your roof. Here are the 3 most common types of asphalt shingles to choose from.
3 Tab Shingles
A basic shingle. Has a flat look with very minimal thickness, so it is more lightweight. This is the most cost-efficient asphalt shingle with a 30-mph wind protection and it can last you between 20-25 years. It is very budget friendly and can you last a good amount of time in the right weather conditions. You could potentially face some issues with blown off shingles because of it’s minimalistic design. Which would cause your roof to have a shorter lifespan and also a lot of repairs over the years to maintain it. A 3 tab shingle also does not offer as many options when it comes to color and style. If you are just needing a quick roof replacement and are on a tight budget, this is the shingle you might choose.
Architectural Shingles
A Mid-grade shingle with a 110 MPH wind protection. Those are winds of a category 2 hurricane! Unlike the 3 tab shingle, an architectural has a laminated piece that makes the shingle a bit heavier and ultimately allows it to outlast a 3 tab shingle. You do pay more for this type of shingle but it will last you a lot longer than a 3 tab shingle because of the way it is manufactured with two layers; making it an extremely durable shingle. The laminated piece on the architectural shingle also allows for a more dimensional look on your roof. By creating depth and contrast it is a visually appealing shingle. It has a wide variety of colors that will match perfectly with any home or style. If you are planning on selling your house this will also raise the property value! You do pay more upfront but you might just save more money by not having to do as many repairs to maintain this type of roof.
Premium Shingles
A high-end shingle with 130 MPH wind protection. Those are wind speeds of a category 4 hurricane! Just like an architectural shingle it offers a dimensional appearance but with maximum durability. A heavier shingle than an architectural allows it to also last a lot longer than the other levels of asphalt shingles. Making it more expensive than the architectural shingle but the extra durability helps protect against extreme elements. With it being a heavier shingle you may want to take that into consideration if the structure of your home can hold that type of weight on it. They are considered a luxury asphalt shingle that are made to replicate a slate or cedar shake roof but for a fraction of the cost. This is good for homeowners who want a specific look or style for their roof but not spend nearly as much as they would for the real thing.
